While it’s not possible to do anything to be immune from cancer, there are lifestyle choices that can boost your wellness and keep your immune system thriving. Every good thing you do for your health can help cancer from occurring in the first place.

Here are 2 major strategies from Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, renowned cancer expert and brain researcher.

Nutrition

Everything you put into your body has an effect on your health. First, avoid foods such as simple sugars, white flour and low quality vegetable oils, according to Dr. Servan-Schreiber. Instead, every day and at every meal, load your plate with anti-cancer foods such as garlic, onions, leeks, broccoli and cauliflower.

Exercise

At least 6 days per week, get some exercise – at least 30 minutes of it. It doesn’t need to be strenuous, just brisk and consistent, according to Dr. Servan-Schreiber. Just take a short walk or use the stairs instead of the elevator throughout the day.

Besides diet and exercise, there are small things that you can incorporate into your daily life that can also reduce your risk. According to Thomas A. Sellers, PhD, 70% of known causes of cancers are avoidable and related to lifestyle. You can reduce your cancer risk by incorporating these 5 tips:

Filter your tap water – Tap water can contain carcinogens and hormone-disrupting chemicals, so it’s best to filter it. Store water in stainless steel or glass to avoid BPT that can leach from plastic bottles.

Marinate meat before grilling – Grilling meat creates cancer-causing chemicals from the high heat and charring. If you do grill, add rosemary and thyme – which can cut carcinogens by as much as 87% – to your marinade.

Don’t dry clean your clothes – Solvents in dry cleaning chemicals are known to cause several types of cancer. Hand-wash your clothes with a gentle detergent and spot clean with white vinegar.

Block the sun – Something as simple as your outfit can protect you from cancer. Blue and red fabrics offer better protection for sun’s harmful rays than white or yellow ones. Also, wear a hat whenever outside, as melanomas appear on the scalp or neck at almost twice the rate as other areas.

Avoid pesticides and chemicals – Make sure your meat products are free of antibiotics and hormones. Also, wash all fruits and vegetables with a produce soap to remove pesticides and fertilizers.
