That early-morning stiffness and those creaking joints might be more than just the signs of getting older. They might actually be warning signs of more serious health conditions, including arthritis.
While more than 50 million Americans are currently living with arthritis, it’s essentially not just one condition. More than 100 rheumatic conditions that affect joints and surrounding connective tissues fall under the general category of arthritis.
Through the following questions and answers, discover some of the causes of arthritis, different types of common forms and sources of the condition that literally means joint (arthron) inflammation (itis).
What are the most common types of arthritis?
The most prevalent kinds of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatic arthritis. Osteoarthritis affects the cartilage in the joints from it gradually wearing away or being damaged, while rheumatic arthritis is caused by a virus attacking the synovial fluid in the joints.
What are some warning signs of each common type?
Since osteoarthritis pain comes from bones rubbing together where cartilage has been destroyed, people generally experience sharp pain early in the morning or after sitting for a while. There may also be bone spurs that form in the joints.
Painful joint swelling and inflammation from rheumatic arthritis are caused by a virus that continually inflames the joints. Fingers, arms, legs and wrists are most often tender, puffy and quite warm to the touch.
List a few common causes of arthritis?
While there are numerous factors that can cause arthritis, here are a few of the most common:
- Injury to a joint
- Performing repetitive motions
- Strain on joints
- Being overweight
- Family history
- Immunity being impacted by disease
- Allergic reactions
What are some ways to prevent arthritis?
While some forms are not as preventable, maintaining a proper weight, avoiding foods that might aggravate joints, protecting joints from injury and discontinuing competitive use of joints can all help.
What are some other ways I can live with arthritis?
- See a physician right away for early diagnosis and treatment
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and whole grains
- Protect joints from injury while playing sports
- Properly stretch before engaging in athletic activity
- Refrain from leisure activities that could damage joints
- Choose fish high in omega-3 fatty acids to restore joints
- Stay at a proper weight to help reduce joint stress
