It’s Earth Day today. And what better way to celebrate than to get out there and take a refreshing walk in nature. Soak up the sun or drink in the clouds. Whatever it’s like where you’re at, appreciate all that Mother Nature has to offer.

Earth Day started on this day in 1970 when million of Americans who were fed up with pollution rallied and demonstrated across the country to help restore the planet to its former healthy self. Now you can reap those benefits and enjoy this beautiful spring day.

Here are 3 tips about walking:

  • Walking 30 to 60 minutes each day is optimal, but even two 10 to 15 minute walks can help boost your health.
  • Try to walk at least 5 days per week. If it’s raining, head to the local indoor mall and window shop.
  • While walking, you should be able to maintain a conversation with a friend. If you can’t, slow down a bit. Conversely, if you’re breathing too lightly, pick up the pace a little.

Plus, 3 benefits of walking:

  • Reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers
  • Elevates overall mood and sense of well-being
  • Relieves joint pain and back pain, and strengthens muscles, joints and bones

While walking is a great way to celebrate Earth Day, it’s a great all-around healthy exercise any and every day. Encourage a close friend to walk with you to make the activity even more enjoyable.
