Welcome to Part 5 of our National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Series. Throughout this week, we have discovered how the latest in technology, recovery and prevention are important aspects of breast cancer awareness. In Part 4, we learned the simple act of eating a few select foods could prevent breast cancer. In this final edition, we’ll discover how women might also be able to prevent breast cancer by making a few lifestyle changes.

Prevention is the key to health

Benjamin Franklin said it best – an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Living a healthy lifestyle and following these breast cancer prevention tips from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center can help reduce your risk of developing breast cancer:

  • Maintain a proper weight and eat healthy – Obesity raises the risk of breast cancer after menopause.
  • Kick the habit – Long-term smoking has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
  • Keep physically active – Participating in moderate exercise can reduce a woman’s breast cancer risk by up to 30%.
  • Hormones and estrogen – Avoid hormone replacement therapy which has been found to increase the risk for breast cancer. Women should also consider taking an estrogen-blocking drug.

Whether it’s communicating online with support groups, using apps to track and discover, or sharing healthful tips, women now have more options to navigate their breast cancer journey. Whichever methods make them most comfortable, women with breast cancer can feel more empowered than ever to take ownership of their breast health and wellness.
